Reliable transportation is vital for employment. Wheels for Work supports low-income Allegany County residents with essential vehicle repairs, helping families overcome barriers and stay on the road.

About Wheels for Work

The Wheels for Work program provides assistance with vehicle repairs so working families can overcome transportation barriers.

  • Repair grants cover up to 25% of the private party value of the vehicle.

  • The vehicle must be insured, inspected, and registered.

  • Participants develop a household budget with ACCORD staff as part of the program.

  • Repairs must be completed at a NYS licensed repair shop.

  • A minimum of two written estimates are required; it is the participant’s responsibility to collect them.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Allegany County resident

  • Documented need for assistance

  • Currently employed 20 or more hours/week at minimum wage OR have a verifiable letter of hire confirming employment of 20 or more hours/week. All employment and letter of hire must be verifiable.

  • Driver's license does not have any points and must be clean of DUI, DWI, and DWAI for 7 years from the date of fines paid. 

  • Meet TANF income eligibility requirements (i.e., eligible to receive Family Assistance/SafteyNet, Medicad, SNAP/Food Stamps, HEAP, or Reduced/Free lunch benefits)

  • Meet TANF household requirement that the household contain one of the following:

    • A minor child under the age of 18 or under the age of 19 and attending secondary school (high school) or an equivalent level of vocational or technical training, (e.g., a BOCES program), OR ​

    • A pregnant woman, OR

    • The applicant is the non-custodial parent of a minor child.​

3. Complete an Interview

 

After your application is received, the Wheels for Work Program Coordinator will contact you to schedule an interview. You will need to provide:

  • Proof of employment (4 most recent pay stubs) or a verifiable letter of hire

  • Copy of your New York State Driver’s License

  • Social Security numbers, birth dates, and documented income information for all household members

  • Household expense information for budget completion

 

Applicants must also grant permission for ACCORD to check driving records with the DMV.
➡️ Clients must be clean of DUI, DWI, and DWAI for 7 years from the date fines were paid.
